About the Oban Area
Argyll is noted for its loch and mountain scenery and has extensive scope for outdoor activities. Oban is a lively small town and is quite atmospheric especially in the evenings, it is a major ferry and fishing port and ferries leave daily for Mull and several other islands which can easily be visited for the day, including Iona. You can expect to see an amazing selection of wildlife and scenery on the way to, and on, any one of these islands as well as the historic and atmospheric Iona Abbey.
Glen Coe is less than 30 miles, Fort William, with Ben Nevis dominating the Glen behind, is about an hour’s drive - this area is considered to be “the outdoor capital of the UK”.
The entire area is rich in history with many sites open to the public and more to be found by exploring.
Walking is excellent and can be enjoyed by super-fit munroists and less fit amblers alike.
Golf, fishing, riding, canoeing, scuba diving and karting are all available locally. Also a sealife centre, indoor sports & swimming pool, smokery, various castles and many more outdoor and indoor pursuits including a two screen cinema.
Shopping in Oban is good with two large supermarkets, two value food stores and a variety of tourist shops. There is a very good selection of restaurants too. The local Connel shop and Post Office, ¾ mile from The Lodge, is also excellent and friendly.
